To
spread risk and capture market opportunity, we operate Hikurangi
Station as six business units, each named after the traditional
area names:
Dairy Unit, Koromiko (269ha) Paatara (131ha )
Currently managed under sharemilking scheme by sharemilkers Dean
& Lucy Marshall. Koromiko and Paatara run 1000 cows.The two dairys units are run in conjunction with each other. Koromiko runs 550 cows.
Tiwhareika a sheep and beef unit (627ha)
Manager Ivan Hill manager has an impressive background in
farming. Ivan has developed Tiwhareika with a particular focus
on bull beef breeding. Ivan Hill competes successfully in full
& mini marathons,
triathalons,& mountain bike races.
Harurunga
o te Ao a sheep and beef unit (627ha)
Trevor Crutchley (Manager) is a long time member of the Hikurangi
Station team and has a strong background in farming and stock
management. A keen dog trialer, Trevor can be seen at many of
the dog trials around the country.
Nga Whenua Rahui forest protection venture (totaling
120ha)
Nga Whenua Rahui is a national project aimed at encouraging maori
landowners to protect and re-establish regenerating native forest
on their land. The Incorporation has entered into a 25 year covenant
with Nga Whenua Rahui after which time the owners can decide about
whether Hikurangi Station continues to actively promote the protection
of our indigenous forests.
Woodlots (total land area of 70ha)
The Incorporation has a number of pine tree & nitens woodlots,
& three poplar nurseries on Hikurangi Station. These plots
are being managed under the Environmental portfolio and pruned
by the Ngahere Trust (a local community work group). The poplar
trees are used for stakes to stop land erosion and have other
uses around the farm.
Ue Pango - Hancock Forest Mangement/ Taumata Plantations Ltd (total land area
of 656ha)
Ue Pango is a ‘forestry right area’ in conjunction
with Taumata Plantations Ltd . The Incorporation continues to own the
land, Taumata Plantations have the right to grow trees on the land and manage the pine forest. There is a no prune
policy with the pine trees. Expected harvest date is sometime
in 2020.
